Wow, thanks for the heads up! I didn't realize just how many stores are in trouble. I live near a mall so I was aware of a few. Hopefully my Penney's won't as it is always crowded. I would have no where to shop!
Christine

Hi all - I received this and wanted to pass it along. Not sure how accurate this is - but its worthy to be aware of. ------------ Here's a heads up that if you tend to give gift cards around the holidays, you need to be careful that the cards will be honored after the holidays. Stores that are planning to close after Christmas are still selling the cards through the holidays even though the cards may be worthless January 1. There is no law preventing them from doing this. On the contrary, it is referred to as 'Bankrupcy Planning). Below is a partial list of stores that you need to be cautious about. ------------ Circuit City (filed Chapter 11) ------------ Ann Taylor - 117 stores nationwide closing ------------ Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug & Catherine's to close 150 stores nationwide ------------ Eddie Bauer to close stores 27 stores and more after January ------------ Cache will close all stores ------------ Talbots closing down specialty stores ------------ J. Jill closing all stores (owned by Talbots) ------------ Pacific Sunwear (also owned by Talbots) ------------ GAP closing 85 stores ------------ Footlocker closing 140 stores more to close after January ------------ Wickes Furniture closing down ------------ Levitz closing down remaining stores ------------ Bombay closing remaining stores ------------ Zales closing down 82 stores and 105 after January ------------ Whitehall closing all stores ------------ Piercing Pagoda closing all stores ------------ Disney closing 98 stores and will close more after January. ------------ Home Depot closing 15 stores 1 in NJ ( New Brunswick ) ------------ Macys to close 9 stores after January ------------ Linens and Things closing all stores ------------ Movie Galley Closing all stores ------------ Pep Boys closing 33 stores ------------ Sprint/Nextel closing 133 stores ------------ JC Penney closing a number of stores after January ------------ Ethan Allen closing down 12 stores. ------------ Wilson Leather closing down all stores ------------ Sharper Image closing down all stores ------------ K B Toys closing 356 stores ------------ Loews to close down some stores ------------ Dillard's to close some stores

I saw the "baby switch" coming from a mile away!
Christine
-
Janet -- Tess's baby was born dead, and she couldn't take it, so Bess emerged, a Jean Randolph-like logical person. Bess went to the hospital and switched with Starr's baby. So, right now, as far as anyone knows, Starr's baby is dead, and Jessica has a healthy baby girl.
Puck
-
..so I noticed there is a baby switch on OLTL. Who did it and why?
Janet
-
ANITA - I agree that your grandmother should be in an assisted living -- and even moving into a full nursing home if she has Alzheimer's. My uncle took care of my aunt at home when she at Alzheimer's and he ended up dying 3 months after she did. It takes a huge toll on the caregiver. Those patients really do need to be in a facility where there are competent staff seeing that they don't wander outside or get into something harmful. You have to watch them every second.
Diane
-
My grandmother on my dad's side was not the sacrificer as she had suffered from a stroke. So my grandfather was the main caregiver. He died at 63 (what was once so old seems so young now!) and she followed after.
Christine
-
Puck - that's just tragic. You MIL really sacrificed herself. So many women do that.
Cat
-
Yes, people don't realize how strenuous caregiving can be. Sweetie's mom, along with her sister, took care of their mother, in her home (along with some paid caregivers). It just destroyed MIL's health. She had pretty severe rheumatoid arthritis then, but she was "too busy" to have this sore on her toe looked, or to do something about that ache in the chest. She ended up having toes amputated, and the ache in her chest was her arteries protesting being so clogged up -- her husband had to drag her to a doctor, and she ended up with a quintuple bypass. While her sister (older by four years) has held her own, MIL has gone downhill since then. I think their mother died six or seven years ago, but she's never recovered her previous health. We think it's entirely possible that we will lose her in the next year or two.
Puck
-
Diane..that's exactly why I didn't want my Mom stay in California long term to care for my Grandmother... as it was she was there for almost a year and a half before they hired someone to care for my Grandmother..Oma just turned 95, stubborn as an Ox! Has early stages of Alzheimers...hey, at 95 wouldn't we all?... but she's also just plain old...arthritic...can't get around well, uses a walker inside and a wheelchair if they go anywhere.... but my cousins all thought since my Mom is a widow she could just drop everything and move in and care for my grandmother .. 3000 miles away from her own home and grandchildren and life... my sister and were really concerned about our Mom's own mental health and her physical health.. it was starting to really take a toll on her emotionally...and I think had she stayed longer it would have made her ill...hiring a live in caretaker was the BEST thing in that case... I still think the best thing would have been an assisted living facility...because let's face it.. at age 95 .. with Alzheimers... she isn't going to get any better then she is right now.. she will only go downhill.. and she's going downhill fast ... she gets lost in her home of 43 years now... very sad...

oh Cat.. don't worry, I was giving the link to our blog for the photos....we have our page.. you can keep your darling daughter up unless you are looking for a new photo...then feel free to use one of my girls. I know what it's like to be exhausted at the end of the day and I don't even work! I have been volunteering at the school a lot this year (I love it but man, kindergarten kids have a lot of energy!!) but wow, is it exhausting! By the time we get home, get all the homework done, dinner, bath and bedtime for the girls.. well, this nightowl is ready to pass out!
Anita

Ania - just a quick not to say that I am sorry I didn't get that photo up- I've been so tied up, I am just exhausted by the end of the ay.
Cat

Hi LISA - I'm so sorry about your friend's mother passing. Yes, 67 is not that old. I've seen the caregivers often pass away before the ones they are taking care of. I think it's because caregiving is so draining and you ignore your own body's needs. I think you are right about the uncle needed to go into a facility for 24/hour care. Working from home doesn't mean she can devote to him 24/7 and it souonds like that's what he needs. That will lighten her load a little, too.
Diane
-
Anita - Thanks...I finally found the obituary online and it only mentions the funeral mass, which I will attend...and specifically says there will be no viewings. I feel so bad for her...her mom was only 67 and the healthies one in the house...her father and great uncle who live with the, are both ill. I really hope her 2 sisters and aunt help her out a lot...she's the only one in the house anymore that can take care of things...her mother used to do all that. Her great uncle should really be in an adult care facility, then maybe she can take care of her father...she works from home, as I do. She also a very nervous person and I know work has been bad for her, plus her ailing father and great uncle didn't help...now this. Whenever we went for walks, I'd just let her vent...she really needed it. She's a nice person...best cat sitter ever...she gives such great care to my boyz, that the don't really miss me too much! I hope she takes enough time from work to let herself cope with all the emotional trauma and the changes that will have to happen. So very sad.
LisaG
-
Lisa, yes, I do believe that is right.. the viewing is for family only but the rest is for everyone...at least that's the way it was for one of the funerals I attended a while back. sorry for the loss..
Anita
-
Question for all of you...I just found out via email that my close friend's mother passed away on Tuesday. Very unexpected. The email said "There will be private (relatives/close friends) viewing Saturday morning followed by a 10:30AM funeral mass at Sacred Heart Church." I assume this means that you'd need to be invited or personally informed to attend the viewing, but it's ok to attend the funeral mass at the church? Am I interpreting that correctly?

I wish Marty would aim *low* and squeeze the trigger already. I'm sick of this crap. Susan Haskell's arm must be about to fall off after holding that gun all week. Maybe the fake guns are lighter?

I hear "Wizzzconsin" alot here.
Diane
-
Then there are the folks who pronounce Wisconsin as 'wess kahn son'. A local credit union took it to heart and is 'Wes-consin' CU. Still makes me cringe and my teeth itch after all these years!
Merfuff
-
ohmygosh, you need to know German and Native American to live in Wisconsin LOL!! Coming from the Chicago area, it was years before I could properly pronounce Kinnikinnic (and don't ask me to spell it either, even tho I live near it!) Then there's Teutonia -- pronounced tie-tone-ee-ya, not two-tone-ee-ya. And around here, Miller can easily be spelled Mueller.
Night Owl
-
8 AM 11/14/08 Puck, TRULY? How I'd love to have you and Sweetie nearby! LOL at the pronunciation hassles! Ya have it...'kahn'. Wait til he tries THIS one: Kinnickinnic River. (It's kin'ny-kinnICK'.) Wish I could promise warm winters. Alas, 'twould be a gross lie ;)

That guy in the picture up there looks like he could pass for Etain's father. Similar coloring.
Diane
-
PUCK - That's how I say it, too. How do you say it with a southern accent? ANNE M - I was thinking of you, being a Canadian, when I made an afghan from a 'recipe' in the Canadian Living magazine for my church Holiday Bazaar. 48 squares of white snowflakes. What an awesome design. I just had to give it a try. Here it are: http://tinyurl.com/ywmh6j
Diane

Well, we didn't nail it yet. DH is still asking how one pronounces Wisconsin properly. I keep saying "wis-KAHN-sin", and his southern tongue can't wrap around it.
Puck

PUCK - City Manager sounds very impressive! Congrats to Sweetie on nailing the job! LISA - Thank you for sharing your experience. Oy, that lawyer sounds like this one -- incompetent and lazy. He called me at home 2 Sundays ago saying, "We have to get you surveyed so I need to do a family tree. I was wondering if you know the names of Evelyn's grandparents. I know her parents names, but I need someone else besides her brother to verify the names of her grandparents." Aye? What the ? You need to know the grandparents of an 80 year-old woman just to survey the property? I just told him I had no idea -- and actually that property was my Italian grandfather's old farmland so I had all the info he wanted on that side of the family. He keeps saying I'm "no relation" to Evelyn. She was married to my uncle since before I was born and was my aunt -- and he can say she's no relation?? That would mean that step-children are "no relation" by that definition to their parents. It all sounds so weird.
Diane
-
Diane - When my grandfather passed away, my mother was the executrix, but not all assets went to her. Mom inherited all his bank funds and my sister and I inherited the house/land. As soon as the lawyer did all the legal stuff, it was ours to do with what we wanted...keep or sell...it was up to us to decide what and when to do something, not him. As long as the will is not contested, it really shouldn't take more than a couple of months to process the transfer of ownership of assets to you and whoever else is identified. The problem sounds like it's the nasty executrix that may be slowing things down, with help from the lawyer. Our lawyer in Lake George was pretty incompetent and we were constantly calling him to complete all the paperwork...you may have to do the same. When we sold the house, we used a different lawyer...who knows how he could have screwed that up! You have to decide if you want to make a pest of yourself just to get them to move things along...it could help, but it could make them more difficult. Maybe of you just keep calling every few days asking for an update, he'll get the idea.

Just an ER heads-up. Saw a commercial tonight during The Biggest Loser that ANTHONY EDWARDS is going to be on this weeks' episode in his old role of Dr. Greene. (it wasn't clear, but it seems obvious that he's either appearing as a ghost or something of the sort since Angela Bassett's character interacts with him in the scenes they showed -OR- it's supposed to be flashbacks...but ones newly filmed...not just scenes from an old show).

Merf -- Sweetie found a job for himself in Rubber Balls -- City Manager! I told him if he got the job, we'd have a friend in town already! He's scared of cold weather, though, so he probably won't apply.

What do you all think is a reasonable amount of time to give her evil SIL to clean out a full 2-story house of belongings so that the house will be ready to sell? How many months? I think 6 is too much and that's what it sounds like they want. What do you think?
Diane
-
CHRISTINE - Thanks. I have to get that letter in the mail. He wants to deal all by e-mail but I don't find that very professional. There's not much about this guy that is professional, I t hin.
Diane

ANNE M - A trust company. Hmmm...do we have those here in the US? Or are these things handled by lawyers here. I agree with you about the one candidate not letting his campaign fall into the mudpit and taking the higher ground. LOL! I'm usually envious of the way you Canadians handle yourselves so it's nice that sometimes we can oblige. :)
Diane
-
Diane, this sounds odd....
Christine
-
LISA - He shouldn't? I didn't know that. All this is so new to me as I've never been involved in a will or trust before. I'm grateful for all the advice here. This lawyer is TOO personally involved, if you ask me. I was astounded to hear him run-down Juan like that. What's it to HIM if my aunt wanted to leave her estate to him? MERF - She did have me as the Executrix but something changed and she made it her SIL in the last 2 weeks of her life. Aunt had told me she didn't trust SIL and she didn't want her involved in it. But the last 2 weeks of her life when she was in pain, SIL came from the rafters (after not having spoken to her in years) to sit by her bedside in her dying last weeks. I this time, she managed to get my aunt to change her will. This lawyer is acting like all this is none of my business now. He's like -- go away and WE'LL will decide when to sell the house and then we'll send you your part when the time comes. I have received NO paperwork from him at all unless I've requested it. The will was horribly written and just says that Juan and I receive the "residue" from her estate after her other house was given to her blood niece (SIL's daughter). We have received NOTHING saying what this "residue" entails. The lawyer at the Legal Grind told me to request it in writing because I should get it.
Diane
-
Merfuff, I thought the same thing today about Starr, I had tears in my eyes. Wow she has grown! I remember how small she was when she started.
Christine
-
Diane, another thought - you ARE the executrix, right? Then you should get copies of EVERY scrap of paper which comes through. I smell something rotten in Spring Valley.
Merfuff
-
Diane - That sounds hinky. The lawyer shouldn't be the one making decisions on listing or not...that's what a real estate agent is for. I would push and ask the lawyer who the realtor is...tell him, you don't agree the property should just sit...what if the market gets even worse! Ask him when the real estate agent is going to walk through and give an estimate for listing. I know you're not the executrix of the will, but there has to be some kind of recourse you can take with a lawyer that is not being honest and moving things along.

2.45 11/11/08 Small world re recent posts here. Re the Canadian election- it's not that we necessarily ended up with such a bad fellow, it's just that the campaign was particularly virulent, and voter turn out a record low. Clearly mud slinging is just turning everyone off. What I admired was that you Americans seemed to have at least one candidate who preferred to discuss the issues, AND as a whole, the process brought an increase in the voter turnout. For those two things, I am jealous! ( All partisanship aside!)

Di- my parent's house ended up being sold within a Trust, by the trust company, who were co-executors. That added bureaucratic layers that added time to the whole process. It was a big frustration. Has the house been valued , and did you receive a copy of that information( most trusts have assessors who do this...) Do they have in-house real estate people? Who is the potential listing agent? I'd talk directly to the real estate specialist in this case concerning the timing of the listing....... BUT, clearly you want notarized copies of the Will, Trust and even death certificate, possibly. That's just a no brainer. Good luck with the whole thing.

A big concern of mine is that prejudice might be coming into play with the sale of my aunt's house. The area has become very populated with people who are Orthodox Jews. They seem to have a lot of money to buy the big houses and they have big families who live in them. My aunt (by marriage -- she was married to my uncle) was very prejudice against them. Her brother and SIL were even more prejudiced that she was about everyone. This lawyer sounds prejudiced about Juan so he, too, could have an orthodox Jew prejudice. In that area, a good offer could come from an Orthodox Jew. My fear is that they will refuse to take it, and the house will just keep sitting there with it's value for me and Juan whittling away.
Diane

MERF - LOL! on wanting to call your first grade teacher "Mary"! That's so cute! I think you are right about the lawyer. The lawyer at the Legal Grind gives out his business cards during the 15-minute sessions. It's obvious its a way for lawyers to gain more clients, too, because 15 minutes just begs for more time. Anyway, he seems very seasoned so I could use him if I wanted to. He was so disgusted at the way the trust was written and called it "very poorly written". LISA - It's in Spring Valley, NY. I've been watching it's value go down on Zillow.com. Cool site. It went from $640K when she died down to $611. But since the election, for some reason, it went up a little to $613.5. I agree that there's no harm in listing the house even if the winter is slow. That's the part I don't understand. What does he mean, "Maybe now is not a good time?" ??? Why, because then his job is done?
Diane
-
My sister and I wound up selling to a govt assisted sale...we thought it was low, but vacation homes not on a lake or in the woods in that area wouldn't get much. Also, it was nice to think it was helping a struggling family out. When I think of my trip to Africa, I always thank my grandfather...it was the sale of his house (my sister and I split the profit) that paid for the enitre trip, plus paid off my car loan. Bless him!
LisaG
-
I think selling depends on what you ask for. If you think you are going to get top dollar and your market isn't doing well, don't bother. We had a neighbor asking way WAY too much for the smallest house in our subdivision. He had finished the basement and added 3 bedrooms down there. Well a basement is still a basement and no one was willing to pay 200K more for the house. It was on the market before this happened with a realtor and is still on the market 2 1/2 years later by owner.
Christine
-
Hey DianeE - Where was your Aunt's house? It could be the market is really bad where she is in the winter, but still, there's absolutely no reason not to list it and see what happens. Also, you might want to try to contact a local realtor to see what he/she thinks of the property, it's value and the potential to market it. My sister and I *did* have difficulty selling my grandfather's house up in Lake George in late winter/early spring, but there's no sense not even listing it...you never know who might make an offer, especially if you're a willing seller.

Diane -- I totally agree that they should get an adult dog. Puppies are overrated................................ UGH about your family. It's ugly how people get so vicious over what, in the end, is so very little. And the guy who took such good care of her house gets cut out. People should just trust that sometimes, the dying person knows who they want to leave their money to!
Puck

PUCK -- When I got the signed and executed copy of the Trust, I saw the dates. My aunt was very very sick the last 5 weeks of her life in alot of pain in congestive heart failure. This latest Trust was done just 2 weeks before her death. It sickens me. It is obvious that the part about the contents of the house going to SIL's daughter was added last because it's at the end of a paragraph in a very different font. Also, Juan was getting the whole house as he was promised. I was ok with that because he had a young family and he worked so very hard on that house for year fixing the roof for her etc. So that was changed so that he only received half -- which means the house gets sold. It's a long and disgusting story with the SIL, but I think she had my aunt change her trust so that SHE would get the house --- or at least half of it. The next morning after my aunt died, she immediately called the lawyer to find out what she was getting. She was furious that it was nothing and that my aunt simply gave me half the house instead of the whole thing to Juan. My brother went to the funeral and her SIL came up yelling at my brother that I had no right to get half the house. What a family. Now she won't clear her daughter's things from the house so it can be sold. Lawyer also is prejudiced against Juan and told me my aunt should have written him out completely and would have it there had been more time. It all sounds so sick to me.
Diane

Oops, oy. I meant the OBAMAs -- not the Baracks
Diane
-
Hi PUCK - I hope the Baraks also choose an adult dog from the pound or a rescue. There are so many young adult dogs that other people have disposed of after the puppy was no longer small and cuddley. A one or two-year old dog is still young enough to have that puppy spunk. ANNE M - Thank you, I agree with you. I'm sorry Canada's election didn't come out as well for you. I had read about that.
Diane

Hi MERF! Thank you for the good advice. A few people I know think this guy is hiding something because I had to request a copy of the Trust. He e-mailed me as a Word attachment sans any signatures. I then requested a faxed SIGNED and executed copy (as I was going to the Legal Grind with it) and he said something like, "I keep trying to fax it but it won't go through. And to tell you the truth, I'm a bit miffed that what I sent you wasn't sufficient." First of all, I think he may have been lying that fax wouldn't go through because it was the fax machine at work which is on 24/7 and I told him so. Then he wrote back that it went through. The next day, it was the only fax that came thru the machine so there weren't any other faxes to tie up the line, but whatever. MERF -- I'm sorry about your teeth drama! You could like to be 100, some people do. If you can still chew with them and they aren't causing you constant pain, I say that's a good thing and good reason to hold off on the dentures. My cousin is in a similar dilemma now. Her dental insurance is gone and 9 of her top teeth including the 2 in the front are turning black. She has diabetes and I don't know if that's why this is happening because she had tried to take good care of them. She wants them all pulled now to get dentures. I don't know how she will pay for it, though.

3P 11/10/08 Elessann, GOOD point about Jess/Tess baby color and I think I may have another puzzle piece. Marcy told Blair and Starr that maaaany newborns lungs are the problem (remember, J/T baby is preemie), which she learned when she worked with Doc Conklin. Way-ell, when Doc Joplin told the women the baby is fine and perfect, she fibbed that it was the baby's HEART which had seemed off-right. So the ground has been laid for the switch to be discovered (hopefully not in 2012!). Outcome would belie physicality and call for more thorough investigation._________(Stopping mesel' from paragraphin' only with SUPERHUMAN effort, LOL!__________Now, a NOT humorous comment._______Cat, would you rather we steered away from discussion of that particular subject, darlin'? NONE of us will ever forget your lovely Lily, but if this storyline is a difficulty, I'll shelve it in a second.__________Heya, DianeE, dolly! I do not envy your long-distance 'duties'. Please do your best to safety your inheritance cuz your relative wanted YOU to have it! My naturally suspicious dad got taken by an UNscrupulous attorney...Dad's naivete shocks me after the fact; when his Great-aunt died . However, there are TONS of super-scrupulous attorneys. With those largish figures dancin', might it be wise to have your interests protected singularly (apart from other inheritees??________Ah, note on my teeth front...went in to have molds made today and ended up instead with a consult with an in-office associate dentist of my Dr. Steve (totally different physical type but the two could start my dead heart - dollies!). He brought up the possibility of avoiding such a drastic move at this point in time (tentatively: 'How long do you intend to be with us - another 30-40 years?' ROFL - good point - I could drop dead in a trice and I'd have sunken $10,000+++ into chompers to be burned to chars!), and checked more than once to ascertain my comfort vs pain level (NO complaints at all) and the fact that these ol' fellas physically chew fine and dandy (other than corn-on-the-cob). We decided to fix things on an as-need basis and drop the dentures plan for the nonce. I am GIgantically relieved. I'd thought all those same considerations / things, and believe the oral surgeon pushed a tad bit toooo HARD for the dentures-right-away plan. Well, I guess SO, for $10,000-15.000 for ONE hour of surgery! Wheeeeee, San Diego (Acapulco, St. Moritz, etc.), here comes the doc after ONE hour of surgery on this mental innocent!________Hehe, I also told Doc N that were I to go the dentures route and drop dead next month I'd be 'postumously peeved' - he had to try to stifle a laugh - and didnae succeed. I told him thrice that I loved him ;)

Ooops, sorry I sent that without finishing. CAT - Can I ask what you think about this? Remember my aunt who asked me to be Executrix of her estate a year ago? Well, she passed away in October and ended up leaving me half of her house. The other half went to her friend and handyman, Juan. Her nasty SIL is the executrix. I went to the Legal Grind here in LA and got some advice because my aunt's lawyer seems to be so lazy and I have had to request everything -- a copy of the executed will, etc. The content of this house belong to nasty SIL's daughter. I e-mailed the lawyer to request the status of when the house will be put on the market and below is the answer I got? If that acceptable for a house to sit until "maybe in the spring?" There's a $200,000 savings account which is part of the "residue" Juan and I get after expenses and I'm thinking that nasty SIL (who was left NOTHING and is bitter about it) and the lawyer are hoping to deplete that after the taxes and THEIR SERVICES are paid.

Hi Everyone. So sorry I haven't been around in such a looooong time. So many things to worry about these days. CAT -- YUM!! Thank you for that site. I would LOVE to buy some chocolate for gifts -- great prices, too! And they have sugar-free for my diabetic cousin.

Hey there - long time no fly-by. I am scratching my head over an OLTL development - the baby switch. How can they expect to pass off a stillborn baby for a baby which had breathed, cried, and was very much alive, witnessed by many people? I would expect that a baby's coloring would be completely different for a SIDS baby than for a stillborn, right? The switch would have been much more believable if Jess/Tess's baby had been born alive but sickly.

Good morning all - I am going to ask a favor. My son's Catholic school is in the midst of another fundraiser. They are eternal. Anyway, this one is for Gertrude Hawk candies and they have a web link. If an order is placed before November 19th, it ships free - at least that's what the memo we got says. After that, normal shipping applies. The orders can be placed until December 12. SO - if you have any Christmas or holiday gift needs - please consider giving the sanity preserving gift of chocolate. The school gets the benefit of the sales. I'll post a blurbabouyt it and try to post a link.

I congratulate the US on electing the candidate who, for the most part, tried to elevate the process from mud-slinging to discourse. He's got a heck of a mess to deal with and I am sure it will not all be a bed of roses but let's take the silver linings as we can. .........I wish we could have found a candidate in our recent federal election who brought out the voters as effectively. We had the worst turnout in our history.*sigh*

I really hope the Obama's keep their promise and get a shelter dog...shelter animals need loving homes, to...even moreso now with so many people dropping them off because they can't afford to care for them anymore with the bad economy. Thanks to Merfuff for setting things right. She is absolutely right about Cat's rules. I was set off by the ANONYMOUS post left that said McCain was the lesser of two evils. And I could go off tonight too. But I won't.................If you are going to hang out in the GB playground have the guts to post your name. We have always respected each other's opinions even if we didn't agree. And heaven knows I've been redressed many times for my politically incorrect musings. So if I can take it, well anyone can. 2.30 PM 11/7/08 Nita, what dolly li'l cats!______I think AMC did a grrrand job with the veterans' group therapy session (which Tad most thoughtfully observed), and the so-far follow-up (Sweeney with the cranial burn scars) is superb. Ya know, the only things Cat (who maintains this website out of the goodness of her heart and friendship) asks of posters here are: no attacks on soap actors (other than generic - but nothing specific like 'Actress Merfuff couldn't act her way into a paper bag.') - we're to speak of the CHARACTERS; and, no attacks on one another.________ It has been a stellar, effective rule/request for a decade or so. Let's apply it to state a view ('I am worried about Merfuff Candidate's political views on __________'), but omit the personal rhetoric or vitriol. That subject matter is perhaps more useful at a website totally dedicated to the theme or taken to email with an individual with whom one would like to discuss it.________ Could we, please? Thanks. It would be a goodness and a mark of good character and understanding of this website.________Jeemoan-y! The, uh, doll (?) used to represent Jessica's baby was...frightening.______A few months ago, the producer or the head writer or whoever flat-out LIED. It was stated that Marty and Todd would NOT 'make love'. Where do the writers go now?__________Yesterday I LOL at Cain's statement and guffawed again today at the repeat of, 'DavidVickers (canine) is a bitch.' Very clever, writers._______Speakin' of the term 'bitch', JANET, am curious...is it ok for ya to use that term in the proper context?______Must admit, David (Davida?)Vickers is a cute li'l twerp...Shi Zhu? Think so. Jan had a Shi Zhu named Sammy who out-lived her about a year and a half (with 'our' daughter, Tami)._______Goin' to Rubber Balls dentists' office Monday to have molds made for the dentures. Not made by MY Dr. Steve Dollyman, but his associate dentist._______And thus the Great Adventure begins - ugh.______Each Saturday (when an assistant is here to work with me and make us a deeelicious meal at a combo of my directions and their suggestions - works SWELL) until the Great Enamel Extractions I'm gonna eat allllll my fave entrees - beef roast, steak, shrimp, etc.. Would splurge for lobster but not available locally ('I' locally grocery shop at the bestest grocery store on earth IMO) til Cmas (and or Valentine's Day time). I am reeeeally mouth-hungry for filet mignon and ribeye steak, so those will be the next two-three weeks unless the Great Dental Extractions occur first ;)______I am feeling paragraph-withdrawl, LOL!

That is a good angle. What I read was Marcy comforts Starr at her loss. I see a baby switching story line!
Christine

Wait, I take that back. If Starr's baby dies, it could heal all the couples and families. That COULD be good story.
Puck
-
Chrstine -- I hadn't heard. Is she gone? It wouldn't surprise me. I think among the rest, she's the weakest......................... As for Starr's baby, the spoiler is that Tess and Starr are going into labor at the same time, and ONE of the babies will die. It will probably be more interesting story if Tess's baby dies (and more realistic, since hers is premature, and she's all alone at the vineyard), because she might go nuts and steal Starr's baby. If Starr's baby dies, there's not a whole lot of story there.

No one dared whispered anything about Obama being black during the campaign for fear of it "becoming a racial thing" but holy crap after the election it became Amazing Grace and the slaves are finally free. Are you kidding me? I don't care if he is black, white or purple.......(FYI he is as white as he is black). I fear his socialists ways, take from the haves and give to the have nots. Where welfare runs rampant again. AND yes I agree that waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when blacks were not treated fairly but wake up, this is today and in order to move on the black community of today must recognize the opportunities that are there and grasp them. Obama did. Stop whining about the past, it wasn't you or your parents, and no, not me or my parents "owe" you a thing. Poking the dead isn't going to get you anywhere. Why is it ok to have black schools, black rallies, black marches, black scholarships, black rights, black tv but damned the white people if they EVER had anything for whites only. Is this retailiation? Maybe but two wrongs don't make a right. Living together as one.......Obama does it everyday.

God speed, Michael. :( -------------- -------------- 'Jurassic Park' author, 'ER' creator Crichton dies -------------- LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Michael Crichton, who helped create the TV show "ER" and wrote the best-sellers "Jurassic Park," "The Andromeda Strain," "Sphere" and "Rising Sun," has died in Los Angeles, his public relations firm said in a news release. -------------- Crichton died unexpectedly Tuesday "after a courageous and private battle against cancer," the release said. -------------- He was 66. -------------- Crichton, a medical doctor, was attracted to cautionary science tales. Watch more about the life of Crichton » -------------- "Jurassic Park" -- perhaps his best-known work -- concerned capturing the DNA of dinosaurs and bringing them to life on a modern island, where they soon run amok; "The Andromeda Strain," his first major fiction success, involves an alien microorganism that's studied in a special military compound after causing death in a nearby community. -------------- Crichton also invited controversy with some of his scientific views. He was an avowed skeptic of global climate change, giving lectures warning against "consensus science." He later took on global warming and the theories surrounding it in his 2004 novel, "State of Fear," which attracted attacks in its own right from scientists, including NASA climatologist James Hansen. iReport.com: Were you a fan? Share your tributes. -------------- Crichton was a distinctive figure in the entertainment business, a trained physician whose interests included writing, filmmaking and television. (He was physically distinctive as well, standing 6 feet 9 inches.) -------------- He published "The Andromeda Strain" while he was still a medical student at Harvard Medical School. He wrote a story about a 19th-century train robbery, called "The Great Train Robbery," and then directed the 1979 film version. -------------- He also directed several other films, including "Westworld" (1973), "Coma" (1978), "Looker" (1981) and "Runaway" (1984). -------------- In 1993, while working on the film version of "Jurassic Park" with Steven Spielberg, he teamed with the director to create "ER." The NBC series set in a Chicago emergency room debuted in 1994 and became a huge hit, making a star of George Clooney. Crichton originally wrote the script for the pilot in 1974. -------------- "Michael's talent out-scaled even his own dinosaurs of 'Jurassic Park,' " said Spielberg, a friend of Crichton's for 40 years, according to The Associated Press. "He was the greatest at blending science with big theatrical concepts, which is what gave credibility to dinosaurs again walking the Earth. ... Michael was a gentle soul who reserved his flamboyant side for his novels. There is no one in the wings that will ever take his place." -------------- Crichton was "an extraordinary man. Brilliant, funny, erudite, gracious, exceptionally inquisitive and always thoughtful," "ER" executive producer John Wells told the AP. "No lunch with Michael lasted less than three hours and no subject was too prosaic or obscure to attract his interest. Sexual politics, medical and scientific ethics, anthropology, archaeology, economics, astronomy, astrology, quantum physics, and molecular biology were all regular topics of conversation." -------------- Michael Crichton was born in Chicago in 1942 and grew up in New York's suburbs. His father was a journalist and Michael loved the writing profession. He went to medical school partly out of a concern he wouldn't be able to make writing a career, but the success of "The Andromeda Strain" in 1969 -- the book was chosen by the Book-of-the-Month Club and optioned by Hollywood -- made him change his mind, though he still had an M.D. -------------- Though most of Crichton's books were major best-sellers involving science, he could ruffle feathers when he took on social issues. "Rising Sun" (1992) came out during a time when Americans feared Japanese ascendance, particularly when it came to technology. "Disclosure" (1994) was about a sexual harassment case. iReport.com: How did Crichton's work affect you? Share your tributes -------------- Crichton won an Emmy, a Peabody, a Writers Guild of America Award for "ER," and won other awards as well. -------------- "Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand," the news release said. -------------- Crichton was married five times and had one child. -------------- A private funeral service is expected.

The stupidity of some people makes me want to either laugh or cry. And for many different reasons. But to laugh for one because they are just so blind. Can't see the forest for the trees. And cry because they really think they are right and their brain works the way it does.............I want the stupid people to stop and reflect for just a few minutes. Imagine yourself in your own country, out hunting or farming to put food on the table for your family. Basically enjoying your freedom in your own country. Living a good life taking only what you need to survive. And then all of a sudden some jack ass comes up behind you and knocks you in the head and throws you in the bottom of a ship in chains and takes you on a long journey where you will be beaten and starved for two months and then forced to work for nothing but the clothes on your back. These racist bigoted people who thought they were better than their captives. Is it any wonder how the hatred has grown to the proportion it has. The slave-owners had the nerve to kidnap these happy people, treat them like animals while they held them captive for years, and then torture and kill them while they tried to escape from the slavery. This horrific crime lasted from 1607 to past the Emanicipation Proclamation in 1863. Over 250 years of this terrible crime. It's only been less than 150 years of freedom, if you can call it that. And you wonder why they are angry. The arrogance of bigoted people makes me sick. But I feel sorry for you all because you don't know any better. it's the way your bigoted parents raised you. And I feel sorry for them too because they didn't know any better. Because their own parents raised them to be that way. Dear God. Any person who would even think for a minute that it is acceptable to treat another human being so horrifically is just brain-damaged. And not fit to live. So what does that make our forefathers? Terrorists. Who felt they were entitled because of the color of their skin. Makes me sick.............I apologize to all my friends on this GB for my temper tonight. And especially to Cat who provides us this lovely playground. I'm sure Tinker will get out the magic niceness wand later. You have my blessing. But sometimes enough is enough. The time for change is now. If you want it to be better, do the work. And stop feeling so entitled.

Merf.. Katie managed to eat with no teeth just fine and dandy for many months.. she was a late teether.. but loved her food! I just made sure it was well cooked and cut up small.. she gummed it all.. flaked up salmon... soups... with rice cooked till it a was mushy porridge (congee.. a Chinese favorite) do you like oatmeal? pb&j? Wish I could cook for you...I could fatten you up I'm sure! I know I could.. after Gary and I got married we both gained a lot of weight.. I started cooking dinner! :) Lately though I've really been watching it .. no fads, eating less, doing more.. I've dropped 42 lbs this year.. I still have a LOT to go.. I had gained a lot of weight in the past couple years.. unhealthy weight.. I was up to size 24 jeans...way too big for my 5'4" frame.. I'm down to size 16's... and very comfy in my own skin... my goal is another 40... took me a year for this much .. slow and steady.. so if it takes another year that's fine with me... too bad I can't send it to you!
Anita
-
thanks y'all.. yeah that was my first thought.. how on earth could a parent tell their child something like that.. I can see saying "well, we don't like his political views or he doesn't have experience" but to say "he kills babies" my gosh.. that is disgusting.. and then to have this young man come to school and repeat it to his classmates! I'm pleased their teacher stopped the discussion.. I just wonder how many kids don't go home and ask their parents questions...just take it as the truth... or have questions but can't talk to their parents. Just shocking. And yes, my girls ask a lot of question about everything...Lizzie usually doesn't ask about serious stuff.. but Katie blows me away with some of the stuff she thinks about.. I've often said she's a wise old soul in a child's body... She's very bright.. bright and thoughtful beyond her years...with a heart as big as the great outdoors... she and I have such wonderful talks about all sorts of things... but never in a million years did I ever think I would have to tackle this subject now... I'm just glad she was satisfied with my simplistic answer.............I know as she gets older we will visit the topic again...... sigh.. no one ever said this Mom stuff would be easy... :) but I wouldn't trade it for all the riches in the world!
Anita

Oh and I was also going to say how NICE it was to open my mailbox tonight and see NO political mailings! ;)
LisaG

Anita - That's scarey! Who the heck teaches their little kids to say stuff like that?! They certainly can't comprehend the complexities of the issue and are only regurgitating (sp?) what mommy and daddy say...what a nasty and irresponsible way to parent a kid. Shame on them! Good for you for trying to handle it diplomatically!
LisaG
-
Anita, isn't it kind of sad what kids hear and come back with. I was always careful with my son when he was little. Does a small child really need to hear about "killing babies"? I think there is nothing wrong with getting your children invovled but when they are a certain age, just watch what you are saying.

5P Nita, LOL at Katie's intelligent, enthusiastic questioning of voters! We raised Charolais cattle and Dad usta fume if someone asked how many cattle we had. I think raw oats in chocolate sauce would be less vomit-inducing *SIGH* Gonna load up on calorie-laden soups, yogurt, ice cream (brrrrrrrrrr), and mashed veggies and fruits. I voted at 1:30pm... and no wait! one of the big benefits of rural life! we never have lines, although Gary did have to wait 45 minutes this morning around 7:45ish..not bad though compared to many in the country. Our polls close here at 7pm.... my biggest hurdle was getting Lizzie to be quiet..she wanted to poll everyone to see who they were voting for...they had us in 2 lines... A to L in one line and M to Z in another...so she assumed one line was for McCain and another for Obama...upset our line was so short! I finally quieted her down, explained we were in line by our last names not by who we are voting for .. so she starts asking people .. I apologized and hushed her.. but she was so excited.. most folks just smiled at her enthusiasm! Both girls have been so excited about this election...they voted in school...had 'debates' at recess and all... all was well until on boy in Katie's class announced that Obama wants to kill babies....her teacher told the class they weren't discussing that at school....but Katie asked me if that was true. whoa... where to begin! so at the age of 8 I had to tell my daughter .. in very careful words and words she could understand ... about a very grown up issue... that is not a black and white issue .. and if anyone of her classmates want to talk about it to tell them it is something for grownups to discuss.. not 3rd graders.. it's way to complicated to understand at 8 years old.. (heck, it's way to complicated to really understand all the implications at any age really) ... and just because Obama does not believe the goverment should be involved in this issue does not mean he is killing babies ... I told her it is a VERY personal decision between a woman, God and a woman's doctor.. it's not up to us to judge others .. ... Wow... really heavy stuff.... and then the next thing she wanted to do was play pretend with her sister and things were back to the way they are supposed to be in our house... But I know this is stored in the back of her head now and I'm sure questions will pop up later... this kid has been so full of questions... we've had so many talks about things much earlier then I ever dreamed.... the secret is to not dismiss her questions ... keep my answers as simple as I can... don't read anything into her questions.. and be truthful... it's natural curiousity.. I'm glad she asks ME... not a stranger or some kid on the playground and get wrong information!

Why do we vote on a Tuesday... in November? The short answer: We used to be a nation of farmers. The long answer: Congress chose November because the harvest was over and the weather wouldn't be bad enough to prevent people from traveling. As for Tuesday, people used to have to travel overnight to their polling location. (In 1845, horse was the preferred method of transport.) In an effort to avoid religious days of rest, Congress chose Tuesday, leaving Monday and Wednesday as travel days. Tuesday was voting (and horse-resting) day.

LIsa -- I didn't know that about the taverns! Interesting........................... Janet -- I agree that Susan Lucci just isn't doing that well. It's disappointing. I always thought she had such natural grace, but maybe it's just that she knows how to pose very well. But I applaud her, too -- she's 62. I'm all for Brooke these days. I didn't see last night's show (had to tape it, and go to bed).................................. The wisdom teeth are definitely better. I had "dry socket", which was the painful misery problem, but once we got over that hump, I feel better. I'm still not able to eat anything but soft foods, at least until Xmas, and nothing hard or chewy until mid-February, which is around Sweetie's Birthday. I hear you can develop dry socket with root canals, so just follow the doc's advice and hope for the best. ACK on the need for two surgeries at once!

Howdy - have been gone for a while and caught up on DWTS - glad to see that Chloris is done. That went on too long. Gutsy of her to do it, but still . . . ............................................................................................................................ Mr. Flatley is a charmer as well as a fabulous dancer. I don't see that Susan Lucci is doing as well as the judges say she is. In the group dances she's often looking at the others to see what to do, (camera cuts away when she does that)and in her other dances I get the feeling she's counting and hesitant. And yes, her timing often appears (to me) to be off. I know that she's doing some great things with some techniques but I don't see her as the complete package. Fit and beautiful, and courageous to do it, but I just don't see the dancer in her. .................................................Puck, are you doing better since wisdom teeth came out? I got bad news from my dentist today - I need a root canal and as I'm having surgery on my ankle tomorrow, very bad timing. Will have to coordinate antibiotics with doc and hopefully buy some time for the tooth. So it's throbbing and I'm really stressed out . ...............................at least I voted 10 days ago.........................just finished reading An Unfinished Life. I liked it very much. Great writer. I hear the movie is well done. I can just hear Redford with some of those lines. ..........Merfuff, do you need to be gaining some weight?

I voted...went during the recommended off hours 10am to 4pm. No lines...though I heard it was packed in the early morning. Did you know that the reason we vote on a Tuesday is because that USED to be when taverns were closed? I think they should definetly move election day to a weekend...better opportunity for everyone to vote.

if you need a laugh...Diane C. sent this to me... ----------- A cabbie picks up a nun. She gets into the cab, and notices that the VERY handsome cab driver won"t stop staring at her. She asks him why he is staring. ----------- He replies: "I have a question to ask you but I don"t want to offend you". ----------- She answers, "My son, you cannot offend me. When you're as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about everything. I'm sure that there's nothing you could say or ask that I would find offensive." ----------- "Well, I've always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me." ----------- She responds, "Well, let's see what we can do about that: #1, you Have to be single and #2, you must be Catholic." ----------- The cab driver is very excited and says, "Yes, I'm single and Catholic!" ----------- "OK" the nun says. "Pull into the next alley." ----------- "The nun fulfills his fantasy with a kiss that would make a hooker blush. ----------- When they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying. "My dear child," said the nun, why are you crying?" ----------- "Forgive me but I've sinned. I lied and I must confess, I'm married And I'm Jewish." ----------- The nun says, "That's OK. My name is Kevin and I'm going to a Halloween party." ----------- HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

OLTL's writers majorly screwed up by my judgment. David irreverently hauling Babe's body around the hospital was horrifically ugly. I can only guess at parental grief when a child tragically dies, but this was beyond the pale. It irked my grommet and offended my senses (non-parental but completely sympathetic) more than I can explain. And yes, I realize that at death, the body is a mere shell. It was still unattractive, ugly and unnecessary to show David's grief in this manner. I am still in 'grrrrrrrrrr' mode over two hours past the show.

From Soap Central *** POSSIBLE SPOILERS *** Lee Halpern, a former prostitute for Renee Divine, arrived in Llanview in 1987 looking after her employee, Cyndy London. Lee owned DynaWomen, an all-female company. Cyndy quit the company after Lee blackmailed her into helping destroy the Vernon Inn, which was owned at the time by Pamela Stuart Buchanan. Other employees, including Bianca Crawford and Cheryl Peterson, later helped Lee in her efforts to destroy the hotel. Lee eventually became business associates with Max Holden, with whom she also shared a brief romantic dalliance. Max eventually bought the hotel from Pamela and renamed it Holden Towers. Lee befriended young Mari Lynn Dennison, who was the daughter of Joe Riley's twin- brother Tom Dennison, without knowing she really was her daughter, Milee. It turned out that Lee was in fact Carol Harper Dennison, Tom's former wife, who had been presumed dead in a car accident when Mari Lynn was young. At the time, Tom had thought his wife had returned to a life of prostitution and had left his wife, taking their daughter with him. Carol, meanwhile, needed extensive plastic surgery following her accident. She allowed her old self to die and took on a new identity, Lee Halpern. Tom soon found out Lee was really Carol and tried to keep the truth from his daughter, but eventually Mari Lynn found out and the two started bonding as mother and daughter. Lee tried to support Mari Lynn's relationship with Rick Gardener. But when he suggested that Mari Lynn move away with him to Austria, Lee slipped steroids into his drink so he would fail the Olympics tests. Rick and Mari Lynn soon broke up. Lee then got to know Charles Sanders, former U.S. Ambassador to the European principality of Mendorra, and the two flirted with each other for awhile. One night they flew off to Las Vegas and, while drunk, they got married. Charles died of a heart attack on their wedding night, however. Charles' wealthy family never accepted Lee and resented her for marrying him. Lee, meanwhile, managed to torment Charles' mother Elizabeth Sanders more than even Charles' first wife, Judith. After Charles' untimely death, Lee and Tom started to restore their lost feelings for one another. Lee even moved into the carriage house on the Llanfair estate to be with Tom and Mari Lynn, who was entering a new relationship with Wade Coleman. Troubles came along when Lee's ex-lover Donald Lamarr came to Llanview and tried to get back at her. Lee learned that Donald was responsible for murdering mob kingpin Alex Crown. As they were lying in a hotel bedroom, Donald snapped and attacked Lee. Mari Lynn stepped into the room, screamed at Donald to get off of her mother and then pulled a gun on him. As Mari Lynn pulled the trigger, Donald threw Lee's scantily clad body in front of his, and she took the bullet. Lee was pronounced dead and Mari Lynn was put on trial for her murder, although she was eventually freed. In April 2008, a woman bearing a striking resemblance to Lee appeared in Llanview under the name Janet Ketring. She was a private nurse and was helping disgraced FBI agent Lee Ramsey care for a bedridden and amnesiac Marty Saybrooke, who was believed to have died in a van explosion the previous December in Ireland. Then Lee Ramsey was killed in a botched attempt to steal the Mendorra crown jewels. Todd Manning discovered Marty in the aftermath of the shooting and secretly took custody of Marty. Todd coerced Janet, who was only concerned for Marty's well-being, to continue tending to Marty under his employ. For the sum of $1 million, Janet also agreed to keep Marty's existence a secret from the people, according to Todd, who wished to harm Marty. Neither Marty nor Janet were aware that Todd had raped Marty more than 15 years earlier when they were in college together. Both Marty and Janet came to trust Todd and his warnings about the danger to Marty's life. During a personal conversation with Todd about their families, Janet revealed that, like him, she was estranged from her loved ones - in particular, a daughter - and claimed she was "dead to them." Janet found a picture of Todd's sister, Viki Davidson, and Janet became anxious and said she didn't realize Todd's sister was "Victoria Lord." Todd asked if Janet knew his sister, but Janet quickly explained that she merely recognized Viki from the newspaper. In October 2008, while trying to uncover the identity of the woman in Todd's home, Llanview Police Detective John McBain discovered that Janet was, in fact, a very-much alive Lee. John summoned Janet to the station and revealed that he knew about her past lives. Janet had faked her own death as Lee, like she had done many years ago as Carol, and then had gone to nursing school. Lee Ramsey had used his connections in the FBI to suppress any records of Janet's old aliases, making it more difficult to identify her.

I heard about this and had my suspicions. _____________________________ Police: McCain volunteer changes ATM attack story___________ PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh police say a McCain campaign volunteer who said she was held down by a black man who cut the letter "B" in her face has changed her story. Police spokeswoman Diane Richard says investigators gave the 20-year-old woman a lie-detector test and are "looking at some inconsistencies" in her story. The student, Ashley Todd, of College Station, Texas, initially said a black man robbed her at knifepoint Wednesday night and then cut her cheek after seeing a McCain sticker on her car. Police say bank surveillance footage doesn't show her at an ATM where she says she was attacked. Todd, who is white, now says she was knocked unconscious and doesn't remember being cut. She now says she only discovered the wound later. No arrests have been made.

Precious photo, Cat! .......... yeah, one of these days Chloris really will be voted off, but she'll be dragged off kicking and screaming. I thought the judges were kinda hard on her in their comments, though, as she did have some technique and truly did some samba moves. They scored her fairly, though. I think what hurt Toni Braxton was that awful Marie Antoinette getup (with dreadful music) 2 weeks ago, as her samba last week really was quite good. Last night's dance did lack some spirit. But it's all about fan base. I agree, Susan is improving but still not reaching out to the audience when she dances - - LOL re the comment that her partner treats her like china. It's probably true. What great shape she is in, amazing.......................Puck, you should be getting relief for the dry socket by now. They are awful but definitely treatable and should respond fairly quickly to treatment. I'm sorry to hear you're so weak and in so much pain.

Christine
-
I've heard it as Reese -- the actress is ex-GH Carly Tamara Braun, so this is goin to be GOOD!.....................Apparently, the pain is normal -- it's "dry socket", which is a big deal. The pain is the bone and nerve in the jaw directly exposed to air, and they have to irrigate it and pack it with a gauze soaked in anesthetic. I'm not in pain right now, just feeling very sorry for myself. I do feel better after a nap and a bowl of tomato soup (the anesthetic in the gauze tastes like cloves, so when the soup hit the gauze, I had "Tomato and Clove Soup" which was odd, but not terribly unpleasant). .......................... Going back to work next week will be interesting. I have bruises starting at my cheeks and going down my throat. It looks like I -- along with my fellow hyenas -- took down a zebra, and I'm busy enjoying it. I don't wear makeup, so I'm not going to cover it up -- besides, a few weeks ago, we did a unit on how if a woman has bruises, everyone thinks her man did it (and what that means as a society, that we fear men so). So, at least five of my six classes are primed to deal with the bruises in a logical manner. ...................................................... My big issue is that I don't want to miss early voting. I'd better make sure how long it goes on, so I don't miss my chance.

LOL at th elongest tornado storm ever. Yeah, it's not like a hurricane, that can last for days!.......................as to mouth, I'm so bummed. I went up to the doc in Atlanta just to have him look and say everything's going great, but instead he irrigated the lower ones and I have NEVER felt such pain in my life! I just broke down in tears -- that was AFTER I sent the dental tray flying because I kicked it over in my agony. I think I cried almost all the way home, mainly because we have to come up to Atlanta every day, and do that all over again, until the doc says we can stop. It's a three hour drive to Atlanta, plus the three hours back. I'm tired, sore, in pain, and totally regretting ever starting down this road. I'd been less miserable if someone could shine a light at the end of the tunnel, but it's all "wait and see". Oh, and FOUR months until I can eat anything hard or chewy. At least I'm losing weight -- 9 lbs in one week. But I know it's not healthy. I'm eating so little, I'm not getting nutrition, and I just don't even want to eat, because cleaning my teeth and mouth is such a hassle. I nearly fainted in the shower this morning (first time washing my hair, so my arms were over my head), and Sweetie had to rinse my hair while I quivered in the tub. Then I nearly fainted just sitting in the car. I've got to eat more, but I'm too miserable to eat.

Illinois has had its share of bad governors. Our current, Blagojevich (a Democrat), is horrible. There are calls to impeach him. His predecessor, George Ryan (a Republican) is currently in jail. When he ran for governor his opponent was criticized for bring up the death of a family's 6 children in connection with a truck for hire scandal. The ads were deemed so negative, but in this case the ads were spot on. Ryan was involved in illegally giving out CDL driving licenses when he was secretary of state.

Christine, I do remember your governors have had a bit of controversy . . we lived there during the Richard J. Daly years, and the Walking Dan Walker days (he ended up doing time).........in Utah we've tended to have republican house and senate and - go figure - some very fine governors who were democrats. That split is interesting...............the word I was thinking of was impacted. My teeth hadn't broken through the gum so he had to make incisions, take themm out and then stitch them up. One was even growing sideways. Still not much trauma or pain for me. But then again I was young. And the teeth hadn't grown very long roots.......glad someone else found that Obama ad offensive, it wasn't just me, the one that showed McCain making grimaces, rolling his eyes, smiling guiltily, and then the creators of the ad matching them to the narrative. Absolutely unnecessary. The narrative was documented and that was statement enough. They also had a video clip from McCain that substantiated their claims. So that was a low blow to show unflattering pictures of the opponent while the voiceover was detailing his votes that matched Bush's policies. Enough already. And to link Obama or his staff to someone in organized crime - - well, it's pretty pervasive, and most candidates separate themselves from those staff members when they find out . . . . oh, and Joe the plumber is a classic. I'm sure the late night comedians are having a heyday with good old Joe.

Janet, just saw the politcal ad you menitoned and it is bad. I hate negative ads. Its like they are saying the other candidate is satan incarnate. Now I know why DH wants to write in Harry Truman. Negative ads turn me off. Here in Illinois you can imagine what we get as our governor is a MAJOR crook and idiot. Anyone who stood in the same room with him is fair game. ______________________________________________________ All this talk about teeth, my son needs braces. 7.00 PM 10/18/08 Oh Puck, you poor dolly. Call the dentist's triage or emergency phone for medical suggestions? Ya said, 'roots would have been embedded in the jawbone and they would have been chipping away at it.' Oh, urgles...makes my hairs on my arms stand up and wiggle. Dunno whether to laugh or cry, tell truth. Since the advent of this tooth debacle, I canNOT get away from dental horror stories! Eaaarly this AM I watched an ancient 'Leave it to Beaver' and the kid had to have a teeny cavity filled, got told horror stories by Lumpy Rutherford and almost had a canary fit. Geez, even the BEAV is givin' me the wiggles...now I WILL LOL!________Janet, only one of my wisdoms had partially broken the skin. The term used was that the others had not **erupted** - ergo, broken the skin. Think **imbedded** would imply greater difficulties...? Whatever, I am heartily SICK of teeth ;)_______Amber and I worked today (i.e., SHE worked, I directed and got a sore butt from sittin', hehe) and we discussed it (dang near literally) ad nauseum. I told her (oh hey, did I mention this here?) that the other day I had (while online playin' bridge) unknowingly 'tongued' a molar clear outa my jaw into my mouth. Dang near choked laughin' in shock! I figger that if the roots arenae too difficult to clear out (although I canNOT feel any such in the jawbone), I saved mesel' $56 - $360 with that li'l lingual exercise. Talk about absurdity in the extreme._________TOTALLY agree re political ads - they are muted here SO fast my own head sometimes spins. Makes me want to write-in Howdy Doody or 'Bewitched''s Sam or...someone with decency. (Omigosh) The ads are bad enough to make me wanna spit my teeth out. ROFL!________Ahhh, a possible bright spot on the horizon - it's possible Amber's folks wanna buy my upright freezer...I offered via Amber a heckuva lowball price.______And then again, I unthinkingly ran the microwave briefly yesterday eve while the dishwasher ran and...blew out a fusetron. The burnt-out wouldnae unscrew properly, Fred's outa town duck-huntin', so no microwave til next Friday. The Fates conspire to make me lose weight while I so desperately try to gain. I'm down to 86# and *should* weigh at least 110# - ugh. Another upside...Amber found for me two pairs of sweatsuits (one juniors, one boys, LOL) - one grey and one a lick-worthy rose color - yum).____Yet another upsider - my pal Kerm from San Diego is 99% likely to come visit me soon after 10/24! 1st time I'll see him since his wife Donna, one of my li'l twin red-haired tornadoes, died. SO happy!_________And the possible icin' on the cake??? Next summer, my dear Klaus, his ladywife and two li'l girls want a summer vacation on a beach in Michigan with a visit to Tante (aunt) Merfuff! Yeeeeeeeeehaw!

Well, they didn't even start moving until I was about 38 or so! The only reason I had them out now was because one was starting to move, and had separated the gum behind the other molar, and food was getting trapped there, causing an infection. I had plenty of room on my jaw to accommodate the wisdom teeth, should they choose to erupt. But they were moving glacially slow, and causing these openings for infections, so it seemed wise to take them out now (otherwise I would have just left them alone, forever!). But looking back, I might have to say dealing with infection after infection might be preferable to this torment. My swelling has gone down a very small bit, but now my sinuses hurt when I yawn, open my mouth to take in food. I look like a big fat chipmunk whose been knocked around by Guido and the Boys a few times.

Obama has a tv ad that was really cruel. The narration was fine. The message is that he had voted with Bush's proposals, etc. 90% of the time, and they had a video clip of McCain stating that. The message was "and this man promises change?" Fair question to pose. But during the narration, they showed McCain's face in different shots, all of which were unflattering. Everybody has their moments and quirky expressions, but this was a series of them. It almost suggested Tourette's, really. There is no reason for this ugly kind of ad. The message was legit and could be documented so I have no objection to that, but the photos were just plain cruel. Both had pleged a clean campaign but it's never that way. And McCain has had his share of ads that hit below the belt. I am not taking sides here, just commenting on this particular ad. I am not supporting either candidate in this post - just reacting to what I saw last night. . . . . . .............................and Puck, dahling, why didn't you have your wisdom teeth out when you were a youngster? I had mine out at age 19, and the dentist said if we'd waited a year my roots would have been embedded in the jawbone and they would have been chipping away at it. As it was, they were "easy" extractions for him, though none of them had broken through the gum yet. Do they call those "embedded?" Can't remember. X rays showed I just did not have room for them. And through years of dental work after that, I know he was right. They all complain that there's not much room to work in there! And I did not swell or bruise from the extractions. I really feel for you, cuz these things are hard on adults! I still have my tonsils and hope there's never a reason to take them out, as I understand that is just plain awful for adults.

Good lord, why won't they let Joe alone? -- particularly now that we see how much he was NOT vetted by the Reps, he's a bad example for the Reps to use. "Sure you can get ahead, you just need to work without proper licensure, and not pay your taxes!"
Puck

Oh no! I have on CNN, they are showing MCcain talking and he mentioned Joe! And let it be known regardless of who wins, our taxes will NOT go down!
Christine

I think we all learned that soaps are rarely educational . . . . as in tornado safety, etc. ..................And Joe the Plumber owes big time back taxes and is not licensed. Oops. Honestly, this stuff is just insane. ........................................Puck, feel better! A filling I had done 6 weeks ago is now throbbing and as this is a weekend that teachers are off, I couldn't find a dentist in town. So I will have to tough it out until Mon. morning. Oh, and I'll mention to my dentist, when I see him, that he might check to see if the dentist his office says is on call is really on call. So much for dental emergencies. LOL, poor Chevy had to have urinalysis today so I kept her inside as long as I could before vet appointment, and then rushed her out there an hour early - "I know her bladder is full!" and she was getting pretty desperate. Of course, she wasn't too cooperative. Would you be, if someone stuck a spoon under YOU? It's amusing now, and fortunately they did get enough for the culture. She may have something going on with her kidneys . . . she is 14 and I'm struggling with this.

are these people idiots? in a tornado you don't just sit on the couch... like Kendall....especially with kids... you bunker down somewhere safe....in a room with no windows if no basement...and you don't get all that time to prepare... moving stuff around like they did in the bar.. I know, I know.. it's a soap.. they have an hour to fill.......but geez....let's be just a little realistic... and Cat.. yeah, love that coast line in Pine Valley..haha...ocean front property in Central PA! and I'm asking for realistic storylines..yeah..what am I thinking! :)

yes, the Joe SixPack reference does refer to a six pack of beer.. why they think that relates to the average American I don't know. . . . . . it's no me, that's for sure.... I just found this about another Joe.. the plumber.. find it a bit amusing....NEW YORK – John McCain hung his final presidential debate performance on an Ohio plumber who campaign aides never vetted. A day after making Joseph Wurzelbacher famous, referencing him in the debate almost two dozen times as someone who would pay higher taxes under Barack Obama, McCain learned the fine print Thursday on the plumber’s not-so-tidy personal story: He owes back taxes. He is not a licensed plumber. And it turns out that Wurzelbacher makes less than $250,000 a year, which means he would receive a tax cut if Obama were elected president. . . . . . . http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14652.html

I need to vote early, too. I've been LOL hysterically over Tina Feys palin spoofs -- how sad that probably anyone of us can be so easily mimicked! But then again, she makes it so easy with her gimmicks, like the "You Betcha". If I'm wromg about Joe Six Pack, then I'm even more offended! So only flannel wearing beer guzzlers are.....??!!??!!..........................................My face is still horribly swollen, and I'm in misery. According to the doc's sheet, the bulk of the swelling should have gone away yesterday. sigh......................
Puck
-
Puck, ouch! Hope you heal fast. I agree, ice is great stuff. So are painkilling drugs when you need them................ Yeah, I always thought Joe Six Pack meant beer when Sarah Palin used the phrase (to add to hockey mom and pit bull with lipstick and maverick) - I pictured guys in flannel shirts and hunting hats - how bigoted of me . . . . . too bad this Joe the Plumber thing has taken so much time and energy. LOL, will be putting this on my blog in a day or two . . the other night we went to a fundraiser, costumes optional, and did a double-take, as there was a dead ringer for Sarah Palin in attendance. She is a native of Montana so could quickly toss out the "you betcha, darn right" stuff, and she was really hilarious. Complete with McCain/Palin button, upswept hairdo and glasses. And actually this woman is a member of the local school board and thought it would be fun to dress as Ms. Palin. Too bad they didn't capitalize on it and charge folks for having their pictures taken with her, as it would have raised $ and was quite funny. Which reminds me, I need to go in and vote early! So much on my to-do list!
Janet
-
Christine - I just read the articles...wonder if "Joe" is feeling like an idiot now...he should! Under Obama's plan, which was what he was trying to shoot down, a plumber owning his own company and earning over $250K would get more breaks than he would be taxed. I also found his comment that Obama could "tap dance as good as Sammy Davis Jr." was extremely rude and bigoted. I really hate ignorant, closed minded people. GRRR!!!

Check out Joe the Plumber on wikipedia, he is not what he claims to be. And Joe Six Pack? How about Christine the librarian?

I think the six pack refers to a six pack of beer, not abs! Sadly. What is wrong with John Q. Public?
Cat

I am as sick of Joe the Plumber (who, it turns out, would NOT be in the higher tax paying brack, who it turns owes back taxes to the State of Ohio, and who it turns out doesn't even have a license to be a plumber), as I am of Joe Six Pack. What on earth possessed Palin to call the average man "Joe Six Pack". So, only men with "ripped abs" are worthy of her attention????? Whatever happened to the proper phrase, "Average Joe"? Sheesh, those dam mavericks, can't keep their metaphors straight!

Aw Puck, so sorry to hear of your pain...try some ice packs! I still have all 4 of my wisdom teeth and if I ever have to have them out, I would either do one at a time (as needed) or one side first, then the other. That way, you still have a side you can chew on! Feel better!

Yeah, they had to cut them out. I was totally put under. I awoke to my surgeon singing to Bananarama. I'm so miserable! I look like Marlon Brando. I even tried to joke with my nurse, by mumbling (with appropriate cheek stroking gesture) "Leave the gun, take the canoli".

I also had my wisdom teeth out with novacaine. It wasn't bad since i first had one out, then later another and finally the last 2. When I had my lastest tooth pulled a few months back for my bridge again novacaine.
Christine
-
and I meant I think they'll want to do a bridge. I already have a crown... I should know better then to type before breakfast! LOL... and I knew you meant forty not four! haha..but seriously..3months? did they have to cut them out? I was lucky enough to have mine pulled so it was a quick recovery...but 3 months sounds like worst case scenario...heck, I had a Monte Cristo sandwich that night. .not the best choice but I managed..I can see no tough stuff, but turkey by Thanksgiving should be okay I would think...cut it up really tiny! :) like I did for the kids when they were little and didn't have molars! and speaking of teeth.. Katie at 8 is just getting her last 6 year molar.. and Lizzie at 5 1/2 already has her bottom 2...with the top 2 about to erupt! and she lost her first 2 teeth last month!
Anita
-
Er, I meant "FORTY" year old. HA!
Puck
-
I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled with novacaine only at the age of 32... took a total of 20+ shots.. I was going through a divorce, about to lose my dental insurane and had no one to drive me.. hence the shots vs laughing gas :) .... I was fine quickly.. actually on a boat that night... and eating normal the next day, just no straws for a week so I didn't get dry pockets... I can't imagine 3 months of no hard or chewwy food.. (turkey really isn't hard or chewy is it?)... or sneezing through my nose..!!!! did they do surgery???? gee, even with my sinus surgery I didn't have that restriction.. and I couldn't imagine having to control a sneeze anyway.. they are pretty much involuntary for me..and if I leave my mouth open for a sneeze it's not pretty! :) But wow, did it hurt to sneeze after surgery! sorry... hope you feel better quick Puck.. I still have to get back in to the Oral Surgeon for my tooth.. the tooth is dead of course as it had a root canal and has a crown.. I'm afraid they'll want to a crown.. but I don't want one.. I will discuss an implant.. my uncle had then in the 1960's already...and they've been great for him all these years....
Anita
-
I had all four of my wisdom teeth out yesterday, so all this dentistry talk is making me groan. It appears there IS a difference between having them out as a young person and having them out as a four year old. I can't eat chewy or hard foods for three months, and I can't sneeze through my nose for three months. I'm going to miss the steaks and turkey of the holiday season! But I will get to eat a mountain of mashed potatoes and congealed salads!

Merfuff, Mr. J had some very good work done at Northwestern's dental school when we lived in Chicago. A problem was discovered (his old dentist had killed a tooth and there was resulting bone loss below it) just before we got married and left for the midwest, and his new dentist at home said "when you get there, go to the dental clinic FAST!" and though the work took a lot of time (a bridge) it has lasted more than 30 years. And the student was very well supervised on every tiny step. As to extractions with just novocaine . . . . can you take laughing gas or anything that helps you "not care?" I would think that anything to help you relax w/o actually putting you out might help, if your heart can handle it . . . . . my friend absolutely refuses to have an MRI on her shoulder because she is claustrophobic, but the tech told me they work with the physicians re keeping the patient comfortable and relaxed during the MRI. Or there's always the "open" MRI machine 100 miles away if she's too terrified . . . . . . . .Maybe the extractions won't be as difficult if the teeth are "ready" to come out? Though you don't want roots hanging around . . . . that would be most unpleasant.

2.00 PM 10/15/08 Thanks, Boston...yes, Big R was military and I have Tricare military insurance as a backup to Medicare (I'm entitled young to Medicare due to Social Security Disability Benefits, which I sought and got without lawyer charges almost immediately after Richard's death - successfully the first time).____________ Tricare is wonderful, but if Medicare says 'nuh uh', so does TriCare and we never purchased dental coverage anywhere...*sigh*.__________ Lookin' into another option which some people here have been nice enough to mention - the Univ of MN School of Dentistry. A (or some) student(s) do the procedures supposedly under the aegis of a qualified professor._________ Prob there is IF they'll do once they learn of my various health situations and can I my heart and I bear 25 teeth yanked with just Novacaine without unconsciousness._________ Oh yeah, it's 25 rather than the quoted 26 (AEONS ago my wisdom 4 were dealt with and not a factor) cuz (this shocked me so much I almost swallowed the end result laughin') I was playin' bridge online the other day and knocked out a molar with my tongue.______ Egads, I whinnied with laughter! Sadly, the roots did not fall out so there's a happy-dance of surgical removal - ughers. But it was a grand giggle.____________To change to a MUCH happier sugject - am fairly sure my friend Kerm from San Diego will visit overnite early in November. It'll be the first time since his wife, my friend Donna, died...and I will be SO glad to see him.

Rocco has been a class act and taken all the tough stuff with grace. And Chloris, surprisingly, did an appropriate and comedic tango which suited her. She did deserve good scores for it. La Lucci was more fluid this week than she has been. Last week she had moments where she just stood still and was occasionally off the beat. But her tango really was good, I think. It would be nice if they would refer to her as Susan and not as her character, as Erica Kane isn't out there doing the tango . . . And you can't tell me that Brooke Burke hasn't had some dance training. She moves like a pro. Thank goodness the judges told Toni Braxton to tone down the "look" she had last week, which just masked her natural beauty. They are right. She doesn't need gimmicks. And aren't those kids quite the dancers? The celebs could take some lessons from them, as polished as those kids are. Glad Laci and Lance finally got Len's blessing. They are really refreshing to watch. She brings something new to the competition. I do miss Jonathan and Anna this year. Wonder where they are? And enough about Cody becoming a man. OK, he is 18. We get that. And he's doing well. But of course they need to brand each dancer with some sort of label. But I think this one doesn't help his cause. And the 7 flamenco-dancing brothers were very good! The hosts should have warned us about the "chestage" to come so heart medications could have been awarded to the weak. ......LOL, jennifer, unless it's sandal-type weather in the NW, nobody will know about your lovely toes. Glad you pampered yourself on your birthday. And happy birthday to Ariel!

All the judges could say after the last Chloris routine was "indescribable" or something to that effect. And to think that the pro would go along with it or suggest it . . . . Christine - Please make your husband vote...even if he goes with an independent. The right to vote is something we should never take for granted. Craig Ferguson on the Late Late Show did an awesome monologue last night about this and talked about the Polish vote for Solidarity, where people were threatened with DEATH if they voted. The right to vote is not a trivial thing to be dismissed and even if it's choosing between the lesser of 2 evils, imagine if we didn't have it at all. The more people vote the more politicians will see that people DO care and are taking an active role in their government. PLEASE PEOPLE...VOTE!!!--------------- Janet -thanks for the kind thoughts on my back. Janet -- I agree. Cloris was amusing once in a while, but that routine was godawful. Vulgar is definitely the word. But if she has the fan base, it will be up to the judges to give her a super-low score to offset the fan base, and I think they are too kind to her.
